About Us

Overview

Light Up Durham now provides free community-wide events that appeal to all and showcase the talent of area youth. We also recognize people who are making a difference in the lives of Durham’s youth.

In a nutshell, we offer the following to our community:

The biggest and best light shows in town!

The biggest and best talent shows in town, showcasing the artistic talents of more than 2,000 youth each year!

A platform for youth to recognize the positive role models making a difference in their lives with “It’s Cool To Care” Awards!

Our Mission

  • Bring our community together to celebrate our rich talent and diversity
  • Provide performance opportunities to area youth
  • Provide recognition to people who demonstrate our positive message, “It’s Cool to Care.”

Our Beneficiaries

  • First, we benefit the participants (approximately 2,000 youth will perform and/or showcase their visual arts skills throughout the year). We provide an opportunity for them to prepare, rehearse, and perform in a professional environment. We also provide YOUNG ADULT ROLE MODELS through our partnership with North Carolina Central University. The NCCU students serve as ambassadors and embody our slogan, “It’s Cool to Care” in their interactions with the youth who perform at Light Up Durham.
  • Next, we benefit the audiences – the community at large – by giving them a glimpse of the bright and talented youth who will very likely lead our community in the future.
  • Finally, Light Up Durham benefits the sponsors of the events by providing visibility and the all-important opportunity to contribute to the education, growth and future of our youth and our community.
